Paint Table Saturday - 7 Dec 2019

I haven't done any painting since before the summer, but the prospect of hosting my own RPG sessions requires me to get some minis ready for the table.  The group often says nice things about the minis I put on the table, so I thought I'd let that be a prompt to get the brushes out (we all need some encouragement!).  In addition, we're having a bumper session at the end of December, so I thought it'd be nice to have some new options.

So what have I been working on?  Grouped here by manufacturer for ease of identification;

Those photos are from last week as I did the prep.  I didn't get as far as I intended, but have made some progress...

Seconds after taking the second photo, I snapped the 10-foot pole the hireling is carrying.  Sharp-eyed readers may also spot that one of the gnomes has lost his axe-head.

Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge X

Also, it's that time of the year again.  The AHPC starts towards on 21 December.

I won't be taking part this year: for the past few seasons I've felt like dead wood and that I've been clogging up the limited roster of participants.  I know no-one would begrudge me, but that does take some of the fun out of it for me.  If you are interested though, I would recomend it.  Its not a competition: it's a group of painters working in parallel, having fun and being supportive of each other.

Paint Table Saturday(ish)

After a week dominated by having builders in and around the house, it was nice to be able to put the dining room in order on Saturday and sit down to some painting.

As ever, the photos aren't terribly good, but I hope you get the idea...

The barbarian is from a Kickstarter that Oathsworn Miniatures did back in 2013.  

A particularly poor photo, I'm afraid, but she's 'Olivia' a Reaper Bones' Apothecary/Cleric. 

Ral Partha giant stag beetles.  Not much more to add to that.

And these are from Lucid Eye's Toon Realms range.  Quite nice range if you like whimsey.

Paint Table Saturday

I'm glad to say that I can present another Paint Table Saturday.  I'm actually picking up brushes again!  I'm even reconsidering my decision not to take up a slot in the AHPC this year.

The immediate purpose for these minis is our fortnightly RPG.  As it's an open table, we never know who's going to turn up or what characters are going to form the party.  Although the GM likes the aesthetic of using his 1980s cardboard figures (which I think are older than he is!), I feel it's nice for players to have a choice of something a little more three dimensional.  Last time we found that we had no haflings in either form.

The humans and dwarves here are from my recent purchase from the Oathmark stable.  The haflings on the other hand are from a Kickstarter by Oathsworn Miniatures which I received back in 2014. 

As you can see, I've tried some different methods for basing.  The lentils have come out better that I thought (though I'll be tidier with them next time).  

This fine feller will be Ranwald the Strong.  Love the scar!

It'll be a couple of weeks before they see any action.  They won't be ready for tomorrow's session.

Paint Table Saturday

By my counting it's been week short of a year since I last made a Paint Table Saturday post. 

I didn't realise that it's been so long, but I'm not surprised - it's reflective of the current state of both my blogging and painting.  But regular posts such as Paint Table Saturdays are here to force progress on those fronts, so here goes.

Not a lot happening (often I have to blow the dust off before I apply paint!).  We have six Mantic ghouls and a Heroquest elf.  With a bit of a push I should be able to finish them in a session.

Both are initially for use in the RPG I've been playing lately.  The ghouls are dungeon critters.  I was going to call them 'dungeon fodder', but experience shows that they're as likely to kill the PCs as to be killed by them.

The elf is to represent my character, B'loxi.  Given the sculpt and game both have an 80's vibe, I tried to represent that in my colour scheme.  However, I'm not particularly happy with it, so it may change yet.

It's a long time since I posted a Paint Table Saturday.

Technically, I've not been doing any painting (though there's still time this evening).  I've had a big varnishing session on stuff I've done during the painting challenge.  I've also been looking through those things I've already primed.

On the table there are some ghouls/zombies and part of the Dalek mountain.

'Twas The Night Before... (and Paint Table Saturday)

My computer problems have been resolved, and not a moment too soon, as this year's Analogue Hobbies' Painting Challenge starts tomorrow.  Sadly, the assessors decided that my laptop was repairable so I haven't ended up with a new one.  However, I must say that it's nice to have a familiar keyboard again after muddling through on my smartphone for three weeks.

In the Challenge I've set myself a realistic target of 500 points.  I done some preparation and have ideas for most of the bonus rounds and for the Curtgeld.  I'm ready to set brush to paint to lead!

So what's on the table on the night before the kick-off?

Well, there are some terrain pieces I've been building but haven't quite finished.  These are intended primarily for Frostgrave, but are basically generic ruins.

There's also a score of so of figures I'm in the process of basing for the challenge.  I'm not going to say more about them until they are done and submitted.

Paint Table Saturday

Apologies for the lack of blog updates, which is down to business, some family health concerns and general lack of mojo.  But not only am I back but, as the subject of the post indicates, I've got some hobby stuff done.

As some of you may be able to make out (I know that some like to pour over the details of these thing!) I'm on a bit of a Dr Who vibe again.  I hope to be able to submit some to the Painting Challenge on Tuesday.

The Dr Who theme means I'm again experiencing the delay gratification that comes from ordering from Black Tree Design - the order went in on 18 Feb and I'm still waiting.  Fortunately, there are other suppliers of lead satisfaction - an order that went in on the same day with NorthStar arrived two days later.  Equally, an order placed with Gripping Beast on Thursday arrived yesterday - my first order with GB, and I'm very pleased with the figures and speed of service.

With the latter, the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge FaceBook page deserves a shout-out.  Not wanting to to order BTD's UNIT figures I asked for a suggestion of British soldiers from the 60s and 70s.  Among the several helpful suggestions RoyW pointed me to GB's Falklands troops.  Although not perfect (I'd like something without Bergens if anyone knows of anything), they are very nice sculpts.  Also while on GB's site I found the TCWD Specials from Woodbine Designs - these include the NOT-cast from the Dr Who episode 'Family of Blood'.  So I've a few of those too!  They're so nice I might order the rest next.

Spent all my challenge time on FaceBook.  Nothing done...  I know it's a marathon not a sprint, but this is ridiculous.

This evening I must varnish an flock my entry for the 'Cold' round.  Hopefully that'll give me a kick start.

Day 2 of the AHPCV and so, as per the rules, not too much detail as to what's on the table.  Suffice it to say that work has started and there's something 'Cold' nearly finished!

Paint Table Saturday and WIP Week

I'm doing something a little different with Paint Table Saturday this week.  As well as sticking to the concept by having a snapshot, I'm doing a 'My Week in WIP' - I feel I need to encourage myself to make progress on my alleged blitz on Egypt terrain. 

With everything, there's the Zulus in the background, which I've tried to do a little each day. I'm also working on a Secret Project that needs to be finished in early November and I've acquired figures for the Santa Clause (I'm a little concerned about this as it's out of my comfort zone - but I suppose that's one of the points of doing it).

I've already posted my ruined statue,   I also worked on a couple more expedition vehicles.

Tuesday

A red letter day - The Wife let me use the round-ended scissors and sticky glue!  The result, some colonnades...

I've got several of these buildings in various stages of completion and as they're really very quick to make (to my standard!), there's no reason I shouldn't be able to finish them off this week.

But there my efforts for the week petered out...

Well, guess what I've finally got around to painting.  My Ozzy statute from Fenris.

A quick and dirty job, that would have been quicker if I'd taken a look at photos of what colour ruined Egyptian statues are.  I. like Shelley, had in mind the 'Colossal Statue of Ramesses II' in the BM.  Which was carved from two-tone granite.  

Unlike Belzoni though, my old chum the Director of Antiquities a) has a van and b) is going to leave the damn thing where it is!

Now, how does that last hieroglyph read?
